Automobile club, baqu4 of Hanyang University produced and designed an automobile using RecurDyn donated from FunctionBay and participated in 2017 KSAE University Student Automobile Competition held from August 10 to 13, 2017.
1. Can you tell us about your team?
"baqu4" is an automobile club in the mechanical engineering and consists of students who have great passion towards manufacturing automobiles.
2. Please explain briefly about 2017 KSAE Automobile competition.
2017 KSAE University Student Automobile Competition is hosted by KSAE and is held every year since 2007. In 2017, a total of 36 teams participated in the Formula division, and baqu4 was received a silver prize in the third place overall.
3. It's not as easy as it would be to have a group of people come together to complete one automobile. How did you divide the work?
'baqu4' is divided into three divisions: Technical department, Corporate Affairs department, and the General Affairs Department. We are working on each department according to the direction of the department supervisor. In the case of manufacturing of automobiles, all the club members will participate in together with the Formula team leader.
We also have meetings on a regular basis for the smooth work progress. It's not easy to have a group of people to build a single car together. However, we think there is nothing as great as this experience.
4. What does it mean to be part of in this competition?
Students who take part in the automobile competition are able to apply the contents learned in their majors to produce an automobile and are assessed for their ability as an engineer through the process and performance.
In order to be in the upper ranks, you must select appropriate design goals and design each part reasonably. Engineers are not necessarily looking for the ideal design because they must be cost- conscious.
5. I think there might be a mistake during the production process. Is there any episode that could be serious at that time but you can talk with laughter at this distance of time?
This year, we considered that Carbon Wishbone to be applied to vehicles by making a Carbon Wishbone for the purpose of light weight of unsprung mass like overseas top teams as a challenge.
Since we use adhesives for bonding various materials such as CFRP, aluminum, and iron, we made tensile tests by making specimens with various bonding conditions. Considering the loads that occur during the driving of the vehicle, it is judged that it can be actually used. However, in reality, when the vehicle was on a test run, the adhesive surface was damaged, leading to an accident.
Fortunately, the brakes did decelerate sufficiently so that it did not lead to a major accident. After analyzing the cause of the damaged parts, we noticed that the surface treatment of the adhesive surface was not perfect. We felt relieved it was broken during the test.
6. How did you manage to use RecurDyn? To build a real vehicle, I think you should be able to use RecurDyn proficiently. Were there any RecurDyn specialists among club members?
In fact, we couldn’t use RecurDyn to design the vehicle as a major tool for this year because we were on the stage where we had finalized all the designs of the vehicle and began to produce it before we were donated RecurDyn software. However, since design verification remains an important issue, we plan to reanalyze components analyzed only by static loads for similar dynamic loads, and consider fatigue failure as well.
We hope that we can manufacture the better vehicle next year using RecurDyn.
